Mountain stay: what is the most suitable accommodation for you?

6 July 2025

Are you planning to go to the mountains this summer to relax in peace or in winter for skiing? Whatever your preferred season, you will need accommodation worthy of the name. But what to choose between a hotel, a holiday residence, a chalet, or an inn? Here are some elements of an answer!

Hotels: for those who enjoy a relaxing stay

If hotels are very popular in the mountains, it is for several good reasons. First, you are entitled to professional reception and various services: breakfast, free wifi, laundry… Moreover, the rooms are generally quite spacious and you should normally be able to admire the peaks from your window.

But the argument that carries the most weight according to us is the fact that hotel establishments are very well located. If you want a hotel at the foot of the slopes in the Alps for example, you should not have much trouble finding one. So we can say that this type of accommodation is primarily aimed at families and couples who do not want to worry about anything during their stay in order to focus on the essentials.

Chalets: for those seeking conviviality

If you have a large family or are traveling in a small group, you have the option to rent an entire chalet. Depending on the level of accommodation in question, you can enjoy a living room with a beautiful fireplace, a terrace, and even a sauna. And regarding the decoration, it is also the best when you love authenticity!

It is often said that it is more convivial in a chalet and this is quite true, especially during the evenings! Furthermore, chalets can be recommended to experienced skiers who practice off-piste skiing. Because since they are mostly built deep in the mountains, you can put on your snowshoes or skis right outside your door.

Holiday residences: for small budgets

Holiday residences are on average cheaper than chalets and allow you to enjoy comfort close to that of a hotel. And since you can prepare your own meals without constraint, the quality/price ratio is unbeatable.

However, they are less well located than hotels and you will have to walk a bit to reach the foot of the slopes. They are therefore suitable for families and couples who have a tight budget and do not have particular expectations regarding the level of service.

Inns: for lovers of local traditions

Finally, if you are looking for rustic accommodation that offers a friendly atmosphere, a mountain inn might please you. It is in this type of place that you can discover traditional dishes prepared with love: fondues, tartiflettes…

But apart from people who are passionate about the local traditions of the places they visit, inns are also perfectly suited to hikers. We especially think of those who plan a long itinerary over several days and stop overnight in the inns they come across on their way. To discover local life, there is nothing better!
