This term is confusing with other similar terms like planisphere and globe terrestre which certainly have something in common when reading the dictionary deriving from mappa mundi.
The world map means in the dictionary a map representing two hemispheres of the globe placed side by side. However, let us note the ambiguity in these terms.
A planisphere refers to a flat projection of the two hemispheres of the globe; the globe itself disregards the geometric space defined by the earth.
It is actually a model of the earth, presented at a very reduced scale.
