Slovenia Climate Map

Slovenia is divided into two clearly distinct climatic zones

  • The plain located between northern Istria and Nova Gorica which has a mild temperate climate.
  • The inland continental zone which has a temperate continental climate.

The climate in the western plain is influenced by sea breezes. As a result, the climate becomes Mediterranean, meaning a milder winter without frost or snow cover. Temperatures hover around 5 to 6°C. There is a season when the Bora wind blows violently and is accompanied by significant sunshine, rarely alternating with snowfall and heavy rain.

As for summer, it is fairly moderate in terms of temperature, which averages around 23°C. This season is influenced by sea breezes that blow constantly throughout the year. One should expect some rain in the afternoon or even thunderstorms. Autumn, on the other hand, is less windy, occurring between September and November.

Regarding rainfall, the western regions experience very frequent precipitation, most of which occurs during the summer season. Average precipitation ranges between 1000 and 1500 mm annually. Other regions have lower rainfall, between 800 and 900 mm annually.

The capital is part of the central zone of Slovenia. Consequently, winter temperatures hover around 0°C or even lower (down to -10°C). Therefore, winter in Ljubljana is snowier and sunshine is limited. Winter is also marked by thick fog in the mornings. Summer is moderately sunny with afternoon thunderstorms. Temperatures can experience sudden increases reaching up to 35°C.

Slovenia Economic Map

Given the small size of the country and its population of around 2 million people, the active Slovenian population is very small. As a result, the country’s economy is called a transition economy. However, it is a successful system because the country currently ranks at the top compared to the economies of other countries from the former Yugoslavia.

Indicatively, the country’s GDP per capita is quite high and already 17 years ago, the country surpassed Portugal by becoming a country in economic transition. This transition occurred by transforming the state economy into a liberal economy. The workforce is certainly more expensive than in other countries but it is competent. The working environment is also very promising due to developed road infrastructures and an air network open to international flights. The official Slovenian currency is the euro and here are some economic indicators:

  • GDP in nominal parity: 48.47 billion USD
  • GDP in PPP: 51.93 billion USD
  • Annual GDP growth rate in %: 1.4
  • Gross Domestic Product per capita: 25,440 USD
  • Unemployment rate in %: 10.8
