Travel around the world

28 April 2022

You told yourself that you wanted to travel the world for several weeks, even months, but you don’t know where to start. So, the fact that you already want to travel and that you are asking yourself questions like whether you should go to Australia or New Zealand is a good start. Thus, in this article, I will share with you some tips that we have been able to put into practice regarding our international travels and our feedback on our destinations.

How to organize yourself to travel around the world?

The first step to take when you wonder how to travel is to get started. You don’t want to just fantasize about going to Thailand for example, you need to devote more time to planning the trip until your return.

Take care of all the necessary paperwork

You must have a passport, it is the first thing you need before your departure for the adventure or to travel worldwide. But in addition to the passport, you will need a visa for the country you want to visit and for the duration of your stay. The visa application can be more or less long depending on the country and there are several requirements on this subject, which we will discuss in other articles. To obtain a visa, you must contact the embassy of the country you want to visit.

Your passport is your first step to travel the world, but in addition to your passport, you may need to obtain a visa depending on the country you visit and the length of your stay. Visas must be applied for and come at different prices and depend on the number of people traveling with you (children under 12 years old). You can obtain a visa by making an appointment at the country’s embassy.

Learn a little more about the country you are going to visit

This is the basis for traveling in a given country. In other words, you need to understand what the social norms are, how you can familiarize yourself with the Thai language in Thailand, you will need English in America or Australia.

Additionally, you must learn the culture of the country’s inhabitants to avoid offending the locals. Finally, know the exchange rate compared to the euro. In India for example, the rate is €0.013 for 1 rupee.

In France, hot water is a standard need, but it will not necessarily be so when you pass for example at the border of some Asian countries, like Cambodia, on the outskirts of the country. So you will need to know what the country looks like, what public transportation is available, how to visit, and where to find a guide for the various destinations.

Finally, you also need to know what the best time of year is to go there, in Australia for example summer is the best time to see the wildlife and flora. In other words, you need to plan ways to go on an adventure during the warmest period.

Set a budget in advance

It is not necessary to save money all your life before becoming a globe-trotter. There are many people who have managed to travel the world with very little money and resources and still manage to earn money abroad. To do this, it is advisable to create online accounts like GoFundMe or FundMyTravel to raise money to cover part of the weeks of adventure and travel.

Then, you need to take into account all the budgets for expenses related to travel and the life you will lead once in the country, including: accommodation, transportation, daily expenses. Only then can you establish a savings and financing plan. Do not get discouraged because you do not have enough money; you will always find a way to get money if you really want to.

Make a flight reservation

Of course, some flights are a bit expensive, but you might be able to reduce your costs by booking in advance. You should also be on the lookout for announced flight deals, and there are even comparison tools that allow you to find cheaper flights like Hopper or Skiplagged, for example. There is also what is called the “buddy pass,” meaning that if you have a friend in an airline company, there will be a small discount so that you can reach your destination at a lower cost.

Book your accommodation

This is a very important thing when you travel, meaning you will need a place to sleep at night. There are many sites that advise you on this, but I think the most accessible is Facebook Marketplace, which offers many listings of places to stay once you arrive. And on this platform too, you will directly see comments from those who have already experienced the place.  To use it, you just need to filter the search according to the city where you want to live, but also according to your budget and the type of accommodation you want.

So, it’s up to you to choose the place that suits you? Is it a hotel? An Airbnb? And keep in mind that it is not wise to pay for everything online. You still need to see with your own eyes where you will be staying. And sometimes, Airbnb is probably a good option because they offer monthly rates if that fits your budget. But for solo travelers, hostels are recommended because they give you a sense of community. Moreover, hostels are cheaper most of the time.

Check SIM cards and the possibilities of using your mobile phone

Before leaving for your destination, you need to understand how banking, phone, and other transactions work. Many banks charge you extra fees when you make withdrawals abroad from an ATM. But some banks charge less than others, so you will need to inquire about this.

You should also ask your phone operator if your plan allows you to call or be used abroad and, above all, if it works. If not, you will need to get an unlocked phone and buy a SIM card at your destination so you can access a network during your stay. And if you only have Wifi, don’t forget that there are also WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger that will still allow you to stay connected with your loved ones.

Don’t forget to check social networks too

The coolest thing about social media is that you can use it to connect with people from all over the world. In other words, if you are traveling to a particular country, you can request to join Facebook groups to get in touch with other travelers who have already experienced going to the place you plan to visit. This way, you will get free advice on how to travel.

What budget for a round-the-world trip in one year?

Basically, you should expect it to cost between 15,000 euros and 30,000 euros per person to travel around the world for one year. This good estimate comes from reading the travel financial plans of various bloggers, different travel organization assets, and our own insight.

That’s just the mid-range. Indeed, you can absolutely travel for less than 15,000 euros per person for an entire year. Many people have done so and have explained how. Conversely, you might spend more to enjoy luxury, ranging from 40,000 euros to 50,000 euros or more per person.

Finally, assuming you are an independent traveler, you should be able to venture around the world for 25,000 euros for one year. So, do you want to explore the four corners of the planet with your family? Try this before your children turn 12. Most travel expenses, carrying fees, games, and more are cheaper for children under 12 years old.

Itinerary for a Round-the-World Trip

Indeed, for round-the-world travelers, the itineraries are those a bit further from Europe because they can visit Europe for a short duration: during holidays or otherwise. Moreover, distant countries do not require Europeans to apply for a visa to enter.

Many tour operators take the route from North America to the United States and Central America. And although these countries somewhat resemble those in Europe, tour operators do not stay there long. Additionally, many do not want to go to Central America for security reasons.

There is also the fact that Africa does not attract many round-the-world travelers contrary to what one might think. The fact is that when you go to Africa, it is somewhat expensive and plane tickets and various transports are a bit pricier due to detours.

There is also the fact that the Middle East and Asia are much more visited by European round-the-world travelers because this itinerary is close to Europe and somewhat unknown. Of course, there are dangerous places and some that are a bit difficult to access. But ultimately, for the itinerary, Europe is the most visited, but there is also the fact that round-the-world travelers want exoticism and consider Europe as the last destination after visiting the other continents.

Traveling Around the World as a Woman

Choose your destination wisely: it is possible for a woman to travel alone when she understands where she wants to go and why she wants to go there. Understand why you would like to travel, what attracts you to the precise destination of your dreams.

Don’t forget to plan your first evening, your first night: This is very essential because you need to plan at least one place to sleep and set down your bag the first night. That means you will need to find a hotel or hostel near the airport if you plan to take a local flight to get to the province.

Protect your documents well: this also includes your bank cards and cash. You should keep important documents in a safe place and also have a copy at home. Avoid going out to dangerous places without being accompanied.

Forget technology a bit: women can also successfully manage their life and their stay. If you have gone on a trip to have a good time, you may need to stay a little away from social networks that always connect you to your daily life.

Try to spend locally: that is, by meeting locals and with very good planning in advance, you will see how prices are cheaper with the natives. If you buy food, eat local. Stay with locals to bring foreign currency to the border. And that way, you will also be connected with the locals.

Preparation for traveling around the world

Investigation and travel planning

Many tourists mistakenly think that a detailed plan is necessary if you want to travel the world. It is possible that you make an improvised trip because the most fun moments are often the unexpected ones. But you still need to plan at least what you are going to do: that is to make a small list of sites and places to visit.

Make an appointment with a doctor

We advise you to have a consultation with your family doctor telling them that you want to discover the whole world. Thus, they will do a general health check-up and update your vaccinations. This is very important because there are places on the globe that require you to be vaccinated against malaria and yellow fever, especially in Africa and South America.

Subscribe to travel insurance: is it really necessary to subscribe to travel insurance around the world? Even if it is not mandatory, except for countries like China, Algeria, Cuba, or Russia, you should still subscribe to travel insurance. That way, you will always be safe no matter which countries you visit. Also take into account that the insurance should cover you for a duration more or less long depending on your trip. So, without being pessimistic, you need to plan at least a minimum and be realistic. There is also the fact that when you travel to another country for a long time, it is possible that your health expenses vary in each country. So, some could be higher than others. Therefore, you should subscribe to this said insurance, it is better.

Plan your expenses well

Indeed, it may not be very wise to bring a lot of cash to the destination. Of course, you can use ATMs that accept international cards. Check well with your bank if your card will work in the destination country.

How to organize your luggage ?

Indeed, we always reiterate that you should travel light and once there, you will buy what suits you. Clothes that dry easily are the wisest choices, because that way, you can wash them in the hotel sink and dry them on a towel rack. Also bring walking shoes and good socks. You will also need to bring a nice outfit to dress up in the evening, because who knows if you make friends there and get invited to a party or even a wedding?

How to earn money to travel around the world?

Indeed, venturing to the four corners of the planet and making money is feasible. Nomads have been doing it for quite some time and there are endless opportunities to earn money while you explore the four corners of the planet. Create an opportunity to develop your skills, recognize your know-how, and then decide on your specialty.

Look for the most sought-after sources of income worldwide or obtain an online accreditation that can earn you money anywhere on the planet. Potential open doors are perpetual once you have identified everything you can capitalize on and how to actually profit from it.

Honestly, you may notice that it is easier to find money abroad than to carry out a normal activity in France. It is said that nomads have greater adaptability, reasonable living expenses, and a better balance between fun and serious activities once they have finally found a way to venture to the four corners of the planet and find ways to earn a salary.

What type of transport (Plane, boat or car)?

As our review indicates, the vast majority of tour administrators take a plane about once during their trip. Normally, you need to take 12 tickets and a little more than 2/3 of world travelers have taken a round-the-world ticket while the rest have purchased each of their tickets individually.

If you take a plane ticket for your round-the-world trip, you should in principle decide on your urban destination and departure zones on each continent visited if it is not France. Without a doubt, the dates of these tickets can commonly be changed for free.

Choose important central points, use land routes as much as possible and avoid crossing paths. We invite you not to limit small trips between land borders, enjoy road trips by car at a lower price if the destinations are on the same continent, such as India and China for example, and also for Cambodia and Thailand.

If you take a boat or a car instead of a plane, the price will surely be lower depending on the destinations. Some countries increase the price of round-the-world tickets especially countries in Africa and some in Asia, so be well informed because no one can do it for you.

How many countries do you need to visit to travel around the world?

From what we have seen from what other world travelers say, they visit an average of 13 countries during their trip. And as for the duration, about 20 days of visiting in each country. But when you really think about it, many of these world travelers found it a bit too fast for their taste. So, if they had to do it again, they would stay a little longer.
We therefore advise you not to try to see everything in record time. For our part, we made the mistake of staying a little longer in places we liked such as Nepal or Indonesia.
And we even stayed a little longer in Colombia and in Argentina while we were learning Spanish for more than 20 days. So we spent too little time in countries like Panama, Costa Rica, and New Zealand, which is a bit of a shame. We didn’t even have time to appreciate Chile, Ecuador and Nicaragua.

How many days to travel around the world?

Plan at least one month for each country, and much more if you cross large countries or if you travel with your vehicle. A world trip is not a competition to get stamps on your ID card. Make the effort to fully visit the countries before leaving, even if it is disappointing. To help you assess the time to devote to each country in your schedule, we have determined the normal time spent in each country by the explorers who responded to our study. When the visa duration allows, we suggest you plan at least 20% more time than indicated in the table. This will allow you to take into account the fact that many respondents would have taken advantage of the opportunity to travel more leisurely.
